MedX Selected for The 97Fund: COVID-19 Relief Fund

Kampala | September 2020 — MedX International is pleased to announce its selection as one of five Ugandan startups to receive investment and venture-building support under the 97 COVID-19 Relief Fund. The fund, managed by Ortus Africa Capital in partnership with The Innovation Village and the Mastercard Foundation through the Young Africa Works Program, supports companies providing critical services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MedX has been awarded $10,000 in funding, along with structured mentorship and operational support over a three-month period. The funding is earmarked to expand access to LabXpert, our medical laboratory information system (LIS) that helps facilities digitize testing workflows, track results in real-time, and manage COVID-19 and non-COVID diagnostics more effectively.

“The pandemic didn’t create the need for digital labs — it exposed the consequences of not having them,”
said Ernest Okot, Founder of MedX International.
“We built LabXpert to simplify how labs operate, connect directly to diagnostic equipment, and give clinicians timely, actionable results. The support from The 97Fund will help us scale this to more health facilities at a critical time.”

At the time of selection, MedX-supported labs had processed over 100,000 patient tests, averaging 1,000 per day across six laboratories. These include both COVID-19 and essential routine tests, helping to ensure care continuity even during lockdown.

The 97Fund's first cohort also includes innovative companies like Bringo Fresh, Famunera, Minute5, and Xente, all of whom are leveraging technology to deliver essential goods, services, and financial access during the crisis.

The fund was launched in response to the severe impact COVID-19 has had on Uganda’s small businesses. According to the Ortus Africa Capital Business Relief Survey, over 80% of MSMEs experienced disruption, with many shutting down completely. In this context, digital health infrastructure like LabXpert is essential — not just for pandemic response, but for long-term health system resilience.

MedX International is committed to building the digital backbone for Africa’s laboratories. With support from The 97Fund, we are accelerating that mission and ensuring that critical lab results — including COVID-19 tests — are processed faster, shared securely, and acted on without delay.
