The Challenge

Ethiopia had significantly expanded its TB diagnostic network to 502 GeneXpert instruments by March 2023, but faced challenges with connectivity, maintenance, and real-time data transmission. Only 159 of 286 previously connected instruments were reporting in real-time due to outdated software and hardware limitations.

The Solution

Under the Stop TB Partnership/USAID introducing New Tools Project (iNTP), REACH Ethiopia partnered with MedX International to deploy the LabXpert connectivity solution as a sustainable approach to connect the country's entire GeneXpert network.

Project Background

Since 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Stop TB Partnership's Global Laboratory Initiative (GLI) have urged countries to connect all molecular diagnostic instruments as part of the Framework of Indicators and Targets for Laboratory Strengthening under the End TB Strategy.

System Functionalities

Real-Time Result Transmission

  • SMS delivery of test results directly to clinicians and patients
  • Reduced turnaround time from days to hours
  • 68% of test results now available same day vs. 45% previously
  • Immediate notification for critical results

Instrument Monitoring

  • Remote monitoring of GeneXpert functionality and maintenance status
  • Proactive identification of module failures and maintenance needs
  • Automated service request generation to manufacturers
  • Real-time inventory management of cartridges and supplies

Data-Driven Decision Making

  • Real-time laboratory programmatic data transmission
  • Monthly, quarterly, and annual TB laboratory performance reports
  • Utilization analytics for workload planning and resource allocation
  • Geographical mapping of test performance and caseloads

Implementation Results

Connectivity Achievements

  • • 502 GeneXpert instruments connected nationwide
  • • 100% regional coverage (11 regions + 2 cities)
  • • Real-time data transmission established
  • • 24/7 help desk support implemented

Patient Care Impact

  • • 720,000+ SMS results delivered
  • • Same-day results increased from 45% to 68%
  • • Faster clinical decision-making enabled
  • • Improved treatment initiation times
"The LabXpert connectivity solution has revolutionized our TB diagnostic network. We now have real-time visibility into all our GeneXpert instruments and can deliver results to patients and clinicians faster than ever before."
— Dr. Getnet Yimer, Ethiopian Public Health Institute

Sustainability and Impact

The project includes comprehensive training programs and local technical support infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability. The success in Ethiopia demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships in strengthening national TB programs and serves as a model for other countries in the region.

Regional Leadership

Ethiopia's comprehensive TB diagnostic network now serves as a regional reference model, demonstrating how technology can transform national TB programs and improve patient outcomes across Africa.
